How to Make Beaded Crochet Earrings

This pair of beaded crochet earrings is photo-detailed in Beaded Crochet Jewelry Set in Deco Style (ch0314).  This article illustrates how the beaded crochet earrings are made including how to make beaded bead cap.

Beaded Crochet Earrings

The earrings (the twirly bits) is made up of longer and shorter lengths.  The longer length is made up of 36 seed beads and Swarovski 3mm XILION crystal beads (inclusive).  The shorter length is made up of 25 seed beads and Swarovski 3mm XILION crystal beads (inclusive). It ends off with a shorter length of unbeaded single crochet (SC) worked in double-strands.

Using the colors of one of the (right) earrings here as illustration, start by threading on 25 (turquoise seed beads intermixed with some random Swarovski 3mm bicones). Then thread on  36 (dark blue seed beads intermixed with some random Swarovski 3mm bicones).







Start the crochet with  26 chains, leaving a long length (which will be used later) - about 18 inches.

On the next row, with SC, crochet on the turquoise beads. The work will naturally start to twirl at this stage.  Crochet tightly and firmly to achieve a nice twirl. End off row with a slip stitch.

Then without cutting off, carry on by creating 36 chain stitches.

Next row, with SC, crochet on the dark blue beads.  Then cut of the yarn, leaving a long length (corresponding to the excess yarn at the start).

Now work a short length of chain stitches using double strands (the working strand of yarn and the starting loose long length).  End off.

We want to put these 3 strands into a bead cap to make the earrings.  Using a head pin thread edwith a stopper bead (4mm stardust brass bead), poke the head pin through the junction of the 3 crocheted strands.

We next want to create a beaded bead cap using matching beads that will nicely fit over this arrangement.

How to Make Bead Cap in Brick Stitch

I made the bead cap in brick stitch.  You will have to adjust the number of beads needed, depending on the size of your twirly strands.  Here I have used 9 beads per round, starting off with a double bead row.  The brick stitch starts off with a ladder stitch.  Join to form a circle.

Work a number of rows in brick stitch. The last (top) row is worked with smaller beads (15/0) so as to taper it in.

Finishing Off the Beaded Crochet Earrings

Insert the head pin, stardust stopper bead and twirly strands into the bead cap.  Here the bead cap is topped with Amozonite Jade, 6mm and a Swarovski 4mm Crystal Pearl (gold).  End off by making a loop to fit earwire (Gold Vermeil earwire).

Cut off the excess yarn from the double-strand chain stitch you made earlier.  Fluff out the end bits to give it a slight fluffy look.

TIP: I also put a small dollop of mildly diluted Mod Podge at the ends of the double strand chain stitch to double ensure security.
