Pliers Rack 2 DIY – upgrade

I have upgraded my pliers rack – a simple DIY project. I made a pliers rack before (in Pliers Stand Holder 1 – Simple How To) but since then, I have grown – or rather, my pliers collection has grown. So I have updated and upgraded my pliers rack to be even more functional.

Specifications for the new Pliers Rack

Old vs New Pliers Rack
My old pliers stand is still strong and sturdy and still good to go. However, I have more pliers now and the stand has become too small. So the pliers are all squished up. And they fall off the ends.

So while ruminating on how to rectify this, I thought I might as well incorporate a storage area underneath. That way, I can have most of my needed metal/wire tools in one place. And easily accessible.

Therefore, the new pliers rack had to be:

  • Longer (oh yeah!)
  • As sturdy (as the old pliers stand.  Of course.)
  • Easy to make (nothing too complicated or time consuming; we are busy!)
  • Can recycle things around the house to construct pliers stand (preferable)
  • Pliers do not fall off the end
  • And how about an all in one pliers stand AND storage?  :)

A Review of the Old Pliers Stand
Note:
as the construction is very much like the old easy-to-make pliers rack, you might want to have a look at Pliers Stand Holder 1 – Simple How To at some stage.

As you can see, my pliers are unhappy getting all squishy like this. Plus they tend to knock each other eschew whenever I try to use one of them. And worse, they fall off at the ends trying to escape the intolerable squish!

Time for an Upgrade!!!

The New DIY Pliers Rack 2

Now let us look at my proud, functional, happy new pliers rack. With storage!

See? So much better right? And with room for more pliers!!! Plus, now I can have my handy blocks, anvils, and hammers in easy reach as well. How not to be happy right?

Some Improved Features of the New Pliers Storage and Stand

While this was a very simple build using only strong cardboard (from old boxes) which were then covered with suitable material (recycled from new but factory discards), I knew that I would need to have some pretty strong support for the storage area beneath (which is only made up of a 3 sided, folded up cardboard).

And lucky me, I have been cleaning house and letting old hoarded stuff go (doing the once-and-for-all KonMari method of cleaning).

And I came across 2 lovely, very strong, and shinny soap holders (from renovations on our previous home). Perfect! So I recycled them into support pillars for the bottom storage area. Nothing could be a stronger, better support. And so pretty too with their shinny metal surfaces!
And to prevent pliers falling off should they feel like taking a dive, I just added screw-on rivets at each end (after construction and gluing on fabric). Problem solved!

And there you have it – in my happy opinion, a much improved, easy-to-make DIY pliers rack with storage! No need to pay high prices for pliers rack (which also tend to take up more space for the same number of pliers), just make your own.
